The 40th Annual Shelter Island Run 10/5k Run/Walk returns on Saturday, June 15!
The 40th Annual Shelter Island 10K/5K Run/Walk, a USA track and field certified course, will be held on Saturday, June 15th, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. Touted as one of the most scenic courses by Runner’s World Magazine, the Shelter Island Run is a fundraising event for East End Charities. In honor of the 40 year anniversary, several celebrity running legends are coming to participate. This year’s race will welcome former Olympians Benji Durden and Kyle Heffner. Benji and Kyle both competed on the 1980 Olympic team but were unable to compete in the Moscow Olympics due to the boycott. Benji and Kyle will compete in this years 10k as we give them a chance to race again and “Leave it on the Road, Even If It Takes 40 Years”.
Bill Rodgers, former Olympian and four time NYC Marathon winner and four time Boston Marathon winner along with Joan Benoit Samuelson, Olympic Gold Medal winner and first-ever women’s Olympic marathon champion, will also be competing. Lastly we welcome; running legends Jon Sinclair and his wife Kim Jones, along with Keith Brantley.New this year, there will be a Masters Runner Category and purse for men and women 40 years and above. Additionally anyone who completes the 10k run in under 40 minutes (39:59) will receive a complimentary “I broke 40 at the 40th” t-shirt sponsored by Harry Hackett, of Merrill Lynch.
Celebrate race day at the 10k Runner’s Festival
On race day activities begin pre-race at 3:30pm with fun for the whole family. Activities will be held on the school grounds and the adjacent American Legion Center complimentary to all. There will be a kids fun run with medals for all kids, plus a kids fun area with bounce houses, photo booth, kids crafts and Mister Softee. Post race there will be a BBQ complimentary to all runners featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, and veggie burgers provided by Stars Cafe. From 6:30-9:30pm enjoy dancing in the street with live music by Points East, an amazing silent auction by Grandstand Sports, plus local artisan food trucks including Pizza Rita and Mattitaco. Race for Good: Supporting Local Charities
Proceeds from the race will go to support several East End charities. The non-profit Shelter Island Run, Inc. founded in 1980 is dedicated to create positive awareness through running and health at our renowned annual 10K road race. Their mission is to provide funds to our communities youth, adults and seniors through education and services. The 10K run donates funds to running camps and various Shelter Island student groups as well as raises financial funds for East End Hospice, Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch and the Shelter Island 10K Community Fund. Charity teams are encouraged and there will be a $10 discount offered for teams of ten or more. Information for charity teams is available on the website.

Fees are as follows:
- 10K: $40 ($50 day of race)
- 5K: $30 ($40 day of race)
- Kids: $15
- Veterans and active military: Free
