Our photo editor Lindsay Morris likes to make a turmeric tonic using a recipe from Saltie, a restaurant in Brooklyn, and says that I must go there to truly experience the best sandwiches on the planet. Bold claim. Turmeric is believed to work as a digestive aid, fight fever, relieve chest congestion and reduce inflammation. Lindsay says it is incredibly refreshing after a day in the garden.
First you need a 2-inch knob of fresh turmeric, which is available at Provisions in Sag Harbor. Grate it on a Microplane or use two teaspoons of dried turmeric. Grind three cardamom pods in a mortar and pestle. Add to two cups of water in a small saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain liquid through a fine sieve and add two more cups of water. In small bowl whisk a quarter cup lemon juice and two tablespoons honey. Add turmeric mixture and chill.
