This is Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of fall and harvest. It’s sure to be exciting. After the holiday, tasting rooms become calm and guests can linger over their beer and wine samples and get into discussions about what they are tasting. This relaxed feeling makes fall perhaps the best time to visit the North Fork.

He was a mentor to many believing, rightfully so, that as a region we swim or sink together.

It doesn’t feel right to cover the North Fork and not mention the sad passing of North Fork Table & Inn  chef Gerry Hayden on Wednesday from ALS. He was one of the champions of farm-to-table on the North Fork, who worked with local farms to source the best possible produce and meats for his kitchen. He was a mentor to many believing, rightfully so, that as a region we swim or sink together. His restaurant is a destination for birthdays, anniversarys and celebrations. The North Fork will not be the same without the big guy; he put so much of himself out there that many people will continue his work. We at North-Forks offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Claudia, his partners and friends Mike and Mary Mraz, and his team at the nofoti.

Upcoming events this weekend include The Lenz Winery. On Friday they pair sparkling wine with oysters. On Saturday, Bridge Lane is hosting Music on the Lawn to benefit the Women’s Fund of Long Island. On Wednesday, Bistro 72 is hosting a peach-themed evening as part of their fund-raiser for the Davis Peach Farm in Wading River, which suffered huge fruit losses during a hail storm in August.

Our calendar is the best place to find events, but here is a sample of what’s happening in the coming week:

Friday: The North Fork Table & Inn begins the day with a farmers market and rounds it off with its Lunch Truck, Champagne garden and restaurant. A videographer will be at the farmers market to allow people to express how Hayden touched them. The Old Fields Vineyards begins their weekend Tastings by the Bay on Fridays and has two seatings each day through Sunday. Roanoke Vineyards has pizza on the piazza at their Love Lane tasting room. If you haven’t been to their main winery, remember it closes to all but wine club members at the end of this year. The North Fork Food Truck will be selling McCall’s free-range, grass fed Charolais burgers at McCall’s Wines in the evening. Live music is scheduled at Pindar, Diliberto, Bistro 72Seaside Grill, Raphael, Macari and Castello di Borghese.

The Old Fields Vineyards does their two seatings for Tasting By The Bay, while Jedediah Hawkins Inn has their weekly clambake. Castello di Borghese and Sannino Bella Vita Vineyard have walking tours and tastings today. As always, there are many other places to go to just sip wine, as mentioned on Saturday.

Monday is Labor Day, the unofficial start of fall. Restaurant Alure’s  lobster bash continues for lunch and dinner. Bedell Cellars, which saves their events for weekdays, will have live music and food trucks. First & South celebrates Monday evening with their weekly pig roast; there are just two remaining so don’t put it off. PawPaw Pop Up takes over Bruce & Son’s Cheese Emporium. Lieb, Martha Clara and Bedell Cellars have live music.

Tuesday: Shinn has self-guided tour and tastings (all week). Just because there are no planned events doesn’t mean the North Fork has closed down. In fact, it’s the perfect time to come out and enjoy the peace and quiet an off-season weekday brings. Tasting rooms and restaurants are all open their regular hours.

Wednesday: Little Creek Oysters celebrates Hump Day with happy hour, and Bistro 72 is hosting a peach-themed evening as part of their fundraiser for the Davis Peach Farm in Wading River. Davis suffered huge fruit losses during a hail storm in August.

Thursday: Castello di Borghese has a winemakers walk. There’s live music at Raphael.
