Charles Smithen of Sherwood House Vineyards Dies at 72

Long Island Wine Country has lost a vineyard owner. Charles Smithen of Sherwood House died on Jan. 14 in Palm Beach, Fla. According to an online obituary, he died while body surfing.

Smithen was a renowned cardiologist. He and Barbara started Sherwood House Vineyards in 1996; their first vintage was in 1999. They have been working with winemaker Gilles Martin since the beginning, with a desire to focus on French-style wine. A story about the Smithens ran in the Fall 2009 issue of Edible East End.
