The wait is over! The opening of Moustache Brewing Co. is this Saturday April 19. Moustache, the Kickstarter darling of the Long Island craft beer community, has been working for this moment since the end of their successful campaign in May 2012. They not only met their goal of raising $25,000, but exceeded it; ever since, Lauri Spitz, the lady of the brewery, has become the face of a new generation of women in the craft beer business.
The story of their brewery goes like this: husband, Matt, and wife fall in love. Spitz, having a quarter life crisis, sees a life coach. She decides to turn her dream of owning a brewery into a goal. On a limb and with a prayer, she and Matt create a Kickstarter to raise funds, then the real work begins. Lots of town codes, trademarking and financial issues strike, but they kept going.
The opening party on Saturday will also benefit the Kent Animal Shelter. The first pint will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, and to celebrate their silly side, the couple will ceremonially shave Matt’s beard to reveal once again their trademark and namesake moustache.
The new space at 400 Hallett Avenue in Riverhead will pre-empt their regular presence at the Riverhead Farmers Market just a bit to the east, but be assured all shoppers are invited to stop by.
When asked how it feels to finally be coming to the grand opening Spitz says, “Totally hasn’t sunk in yet.”
