This type of weather always leaves us wondering: What do people eat when they’re surrounded by snow all the time? Think of the Alps. What do they eat there? We’ll tell you what they eat; they eat melted cheese with which they top soft potatoes, crunchy little pickles and cured meats.

That’s four of our favorite things right there.

A good place to start your latest addiction — fondue — is Cavaniola’s, one of the larger cheese shops on the East End with locations in Sag Harbor and Greenport. This winter they are featuring the Boska mini, a cast iron raclette set especially for two. It even travels, just fold it up.

Cavaniola’s recommends using a washed rind Swiss made from cow’s-milk for your fondue. Cut up chunks of roasted potatoes, apples, cornichons, bread, soppresatta or roasted vegetables for a great winter meal. Just want to kick back?
