Sydney’s “Taylor” Made Wins the Westhampton Beach Chowder Contest

The field wasn’t large but the competition was huge. The three entrants in the chowder contest held at the second annual Westhampton Beach Oyster Festival were Sydney’s, Cor-J Seafood and New Moon Café. The winner was chosen by popular vote and posted on the website of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Westhampton, which sponsored the event. Sydney’s came in first.

All the chowders were New England style and made with clams. Sydney’s was definitely the clammiest, with a clam broth front and center. Cor-J’s chowder, which I eat often, is very thick and creamy, a meal in itself. The chowder from New Moon had a Tex-Mex feel to it, with seasonings that echo the restaurant’s menu.

The turnout was great for the second year. Lots of kids and dogs, face painting, decoy making exhibits, boat exhibits, a guy on stilts and a 50-50 raffle. Bonus: Everyone who paid the $5 entry fee got a coupon for a free carwash at Beach Hand Wash on Riverhead Road. See you next year!
