Cheese Across the Bay: Cavaniola’s Comes to Greenport

North Fork turophiles rejoice! Cavaniola’s Gourmet, the cheese mecca on Division Street in Sag Harbor, has opened a cheese counter and cafe in the Vine & Branches store on Main Street in Greenport. This is the latest phase in a steady expansion for the shop with pioneering American cheesemonger roots that go back to the 1960s, that included opening a kitchen and wine shop in Sag Harbor–enhancing a Sag Harbor culinary corridor that also includes Provisions, Murf’s Bar, the Sag Harbor Baking Company and Peconic Beverage–as well as bringing an outpost of Cavaniola’s to Tribeca last summer.

The new Cavaniola’s is located in the Vine & Branches shop at 477 Main Street in Greenport. Vine & Branches is the purveyor of olive oils, vinegars and other necessities that opened last year. (Cavaniola’s in Sag Harbor is currently offering three varieties of Vine & Branch’s fresh, floral oils—the only bulk oil sales in Sag Harbor.) In Greenport,  Cavaniola’s will offer more than 80 cheeses, including American and imported farmstead favorites like nutty Neal’s Yard cheddar, gooey D’affinois and creamy Old Chatham Sheparding Co from the Hudson Valley. The shop will brew and serve coffee from Bridgehampton coffee roaster Java Nation, and serve both breakfast and lunch items at a 50-seat patio outside the shop. Look for cheese-anchored items like egg, goat cheese and asparagus, as well as the paninis, soups and other favorities familiar to Sag Harbor customers. Whether for Long Island wine country sojouners or locals, this new dairy offering will enhance an already rich Greenport gastronomic experience–setting the standard high for its sister whaling town across the bay.
