Long Island Restaurant Week Can Stretch Your Budget and Geography

With our recent sojourn at Hofstra for the Small Farm Summit, and our upcoming beer event in Bellmore, we’ve been thinking a lot about the eating options west–not east–of Riverhead. And Long Island Restaurant Week, in full swing through this Sunday, April 29, offers just the economic incentive to further explore Nassau County, western Suffolk and, finally, the East End. Most of the nearly 200 participating restaurants, each offering a $24.95, three-course prix fixe, are in fact outside of the East End. From Guy Reuge’s Mirabelle in Stony Brook to Tom Schaudel’s Jewel in Melville, from Curry Club in East Setauket to the Westbury Manor in Westbury, the options tilt heavily towards Italian-American and seafood (this is Long Island, after all), with strong new showings from farm-to-table and selected ethnic eats.

“If I didn’t have kids and a limited bullpen of babysitters, my wife and I would be using Restaurant Week to devour the North Fork restaurants we have yet to try, including A Lure, Jamesport Manor Inn, Noah’s and North Fork Oyster Bar,” said Lenn Thompson of the popular oenophile blog New York Cork Report. “Of course, we’d also try to find a way to visit old favorites like Luce & Hawkins and North Fork Table — places we love, but can’t afford to eat at with much frequency. Restaurant Week is a great time to explore corners of Long Island that you don’t normally find yourself in. Leaving the twin forks, the restaurants I’d like experience this week include favorites like Mirabelle (Stony Brook) and The Grill Room (Haupaugge) but also places I have yet to try like CoolFish (Syosset), Jewel (Melville), and fork & vine (Glen Head).”

Visit the week’s page to search by town and region, and be sure to let us know of any favorites. For the benefit of our more parochial readers, we’ve pasted the 20 East End participants below, but we encourage any commuters among us to work a Mid-Island meal pitstop into their next LIE trip.
