Check Out South Fork Natural History Museum’s Nature Walks, Birding Outings and Family-Friendly Workshops

The touching tank--filled with turtles, crabs, sea stars, shellfish and all manner of aquatic life--is among the most popular destinations at SoFo.

The fall is a good time to catch up on the natural beauty of the East End, and Bridgehampton-based South Fork Natural History Museum provides regular outings fit for the entire family, from amateur bird watching to bay seining, from salamander spotting to acorn art making.

Operating in a spectacular building on the Sag Harbor-Bridgehampton Turnpike since 2005, the museum features dioramas of the East End’s major flora and fauna, friendly on-site docents, and Vineyard Field, a 3-acre space filled with hiking trails (part of the Long Pond Greenbelt), wetlands and cedar groves that was formerly the first vineyard planted on the South Fork. There’s also a natural history-inflected gift shop upstairs that is nearly as popular as the sealife-filled touching tank downstairs. The member newsletter (we’ve been members since 2010) features columns about enjoying the outdoors with children through fishing, gardening, hiking and nature literacy. This coming weekend, SoFo presents Late Fall Migration at Montauk Point on Saturday, Oct. 13 starting at 7:45 am in Montauk led by Peter Polshek. From their website: Cold weather Canadian fronts come through our area at this time of year bringing with them waves of migrating passerines (perching birds). Most of these birds migrate at night but during the day they alight to feed and rest. Join expert birder Peter on this early morning visit to Montauk Point, long recognized as one of the East Coast’s most important migration traps. 

Sunday, October 14, there’s a beachcombing and sandcasting workshop in East Hampton where attendees will make their own Plaster of Paris creations of shells and other beach finds.
